We Want to See More of These 5 Garage Trends in 2015

Did you know that the system that opens and closes sectional garage doors hasn’t actually changed much at all since the 1970s? The materials we use have gotten more efficient, but the overall design really hasn’t changed in over 40 years.

Of course, we know what homeowners look for in garage doors, and that hasn’t changed much over the years, either. They need low-maintenance doors with good insulation for more efficient energy usage, and they want designs that work well with the style and architecture of their homes. In 2014, we saw a few trends for garage doors that met homeowners’ needs and moved garage door technology further into the future. We’d love to see more of these in 2015:

1. More automation

Using iOS and Android apps, the latest garage door openers work with your laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone. Right now, we’re seeing a lot of individual apps from different manufacturers. You have one for your garage, one for your lighting, another for your alarm system, etc. In 2015 and moving forward, we’d love to see more consolidation, letting you access everything you need with a single swipe or click.

2. More color choices

Homeowners want unique garage doors that not only look great with their homes but also reflect their individual personalities. We’ve been seeing a lot more color choices available from garage door manufacturers lately, and we want to see this trend continue.

One manufacturer is actually even going a step beyond the rest with specialized inkjet processing that can render custom images directly onto your garage door. Imagine having your favorite football team’s logo on your door this season!

As an extension of this, we would very much like to see graffiti-resistant paint introduced to the market this year, allowing homeowners in urban areas to better protect their property.

3. more finishes

Last year, we saw a lot more eye-catching finishes on garage door hardware (hinges, rollers, tracks, etc.), and we love it. For homeowners who spend a lot of time working or playing in the garage, these extra touches really make a difference.

4. more savings on heating and cooling

With more and more homeowners using their garages as home gyms, rec rooms, and workshops, the garage must become more of an extension of their living space. That means more climate control, which means better insulation. Thanks to polyurethane foam insulation, garage doors are now better insulated than ever, making it possible to heat and/or cool your garage without wasting a lot of energy and running up large utility bills.

5. more windows

With so many gorgeous modern and contemporary houses being built today, homeowners are interested in more updated garage door styles, especially those with more windows. Thanks to market globalization, we’ve already seen a number of European garage door and window designs coming over, and we expect to see a lot more.

We’re excited to see an increase in designs incorporating more and larger windows as well, because they also create a wonderful passive energy source. With one of these designs, you could let the sun heat your garage all winter long at no charge.

As we see more and more people using their garages as the main entrances to their homes, we hope to continue to see door and component manufacturers creating products to make homeowners’ lives easier.
