Q: Why would you make a playroom in your garage?

Convert your garage to a playroom

A: Well, why wouldn’t I? We weren’t really using the garage to park our cars, so it was pretty much wasted space. Also, our back yard isn’t all that big, and it fronts on the street. I was worried about my little guy kicking his ball out of the yard and then diving for it – not a good scenario! I can supervise him far more easily when he’s playing indoors, so a garage playroom just seemed like the sensible thing to do.

He’s safe all year round, and I don’t have to worry about him playing out in the cold throughout the winter. It’s the ultimate indoor play space, and he’s not going to damage anything in the adult areas of the house.

Q: What type of paint did you use on your concrete walls?

A: You could find all kinds of paints that are great for concrete walls and floors, but we went with Behr premium Concrete & Garage Floor Paint. It comes in a range of colors, and is extremely durable. offer similar products made for concrete. Ask the experts at your local hardware or paint supplies store to see what options they have.

Q: How does your playroom work for you in winter?

A: It works beautifully! My boy is never cold, because I have a Cambridge garage door with R-16 thermal resistance. It’s insulated to the max, so most of the time we don’t even have to turn on the heat. But when we do, we have a manual heating system that’s very cost-effective.

Q: Garage doors can be dangerous for kids. How do you handle the safety issue?

A: Our garage door opener is disconnected. When the kids get older, we’ll hook it back up, but in the meantime, even though the buttons are out of reach, we’re erring on the side of caution.

Q: Where did you get find all that cool stuff?

A: We do have cool stuff, don’t we? Well, as to the storage solutions, I really didn’t have to look any further than IKEA. I can’t believe how many storage options they have, and how easy they are to assemble. And of course there’s the affordability. I’m pretty handy, and so is my husband, so I guess we could have done it ourselves, but Ikea made it so much easier.

As to the puzzle floor mats, you can get them just about anywhere. Walmart has them, and so does Home Depot, and almost any store that caters to kids can give you something similar. You can get them on Amazon, too. We bought a variety from several different sources.

The wall stickers are also available from a variety of sources. I got some from DeSerres, which is a Canadian Arts and Crafts . I also shopped at Michaels, and ordered some online as well. Just use your imagination, and then find a store that has what you want. It’s really pretty easy to create a magical room for your kids.
