Get Your Garage Clean This Spring

Get your garage clean this spring

Pack up the winter clothes and save the firewood for another occasion because spring is here and you no longer need to worry about shivering. Now that you can move outside your home without worry of frostbite, it is time to clean and organize those forgotten spots.

Spring is a time for cleaning, but before you begin, make sure you are ready. When you begin cleaning, you want to be certain you don’t neglect any areas of your home, and yes, this means the garage. Your garage is one of the rooms in your home that collects the most stuff, so why not start your spring-cleaning mission right there. Think about it; if you get the hardest part done first, the other rooms will be a breeze!

Prepare for a good spring cleaning

Before you start tackling your garage, you want to spend some time gathering all of the cleaning supplies you need first. You definitely need to have heavy-duty garbage bags on hand and some boxes with tape for storage purposes. Grab a permanent marker so you can write on the boxes and identify what is inside, otherwise, you will find yourself digging through every box in the garage just to find one thing.

Now that you are almost ready, consider setting up an area where you can put items that you want to sell. Your spring cleaning extravaganza can quickly turn into a profitable activity for you. Should you not want to run a garage sale, you can donate the items you no longer want to a good cause. Whichever you decide, the items need to go because simply reorganizing your clutter is not going to cut it.

Make a keep pile and label it

Many of the items you will come across in your garage are items you can put to good use. These items often get lost as more items begin piling on top of them. When you uncover an item you want to keep, set it to the side and label it. For instance, if you have chemicals for cleaning your home scattered throughout the garage, gather them and put them in one pile. Place a label on your cabinet and place the chemicals inside. This way, you can quickly locate the chemicals when you need them.

Start with the top and work to the bottom

You never want to start at the bottom of the clutter, as this will only create a bigger mess in your garage. Start with the items stacked on top and figure out what you want to do with them. Work your way down the stack of stuff and you will eventually reach the bottom. Organize everything and place it in its proper spot. Keeping up with cleaning your garage throughout the year will be much easier once you give everything a home.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is probably going to be a lot of dirt, dust, and other allergens floating around. Consider wearing a dust mask to protect yourself and to prevent an asthma attack or flare up of allergies. Although dirt will begin flying, don’t be afraid to really dig in and get dirty; it’ll be worth it.

Small cleanups throughout the year

After you have tackled this large spring cleaning project, consider setting aside time throughout the year for mini touchups and cleanups. Whether you choose to do these mini cleanups every three months or six months, your effort, and work will dramatically improve your household organization and prevent a huge spring cleanup next year!
