Creating a Home Office in Your Garage

Creating a home office in your garage

Just because you don’t have an extra room in your house, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a home office. Your garage is a great place to create an office, and while it might take a few simple steps to get there, you’ll soon have a quiet, productive space away from the distractions and noise inside your home. Just use the following suggestions to get yourself started.

Clutter must go!

The first step in transforming your garage into an office is getting rid of all the clutter. While you might think that stacks of boxes and other stuff all around won’t matter, it will quickly become a major distraction – especially on those days when nearly anything is better than whatever it is you are trying to complete.

Start by donating or recycling anything you don’t need. Depending on the amount of space you have available, and what you want to keep, you may need to consider a storage unit to hold everything. You’ll also want to organize everything using shelves or cabinets.

Lighting and comfort

The lighting in your garage and the heating and cooling are equally important. You need to make sure you have ample lighting to make sure you can see clearly without causing eye strain, which often only requires an additional lamp if you have strong lights already. If you own your home, you can consider running more lights into the garage, as well as your heating and cooling for maximum comfort. If you rent, you might have to add a lamp or two, and use a space heater and fan to stay comfortable.

If you own, you should also consider finishing the garage if it isn’t already, and adding energy efficient windows and garage doors for even more comfort.

Setting up your office

Once you’ve made the necessary changes and/or additions, you’re ready to set up your office space. Maximum productivity requires comfortable seating and a desk that holds everything you need in the right configuration – Don’t forget to tuck all those cords out of the way after hooking everything up to make the space safe.

You will also need to add bookshelves or filing cabinets to make sure you have everything you need close at hand so you don’t have to constantly leave your office. Add a few finishing touches like pictures and decorations to make it feel homey, and you have yourself a nice new office in your garage!
