Starting a Garage Band in the Garage Is Feasible

What is a wall-mounted garage door opener?

What do you do if your teenager has an idea that they should be in a band? Normally, you want to be encouraging of your child in all their creative endeavors. Of course, when you find out that your teen has decided that your garage is the best place to practice, you might start to rethink things. It has all that space, you aren’t using it for your car, and it really would make a wonderful place to practice. Of course, you do not like the idea of having the neighbors up in arms because of the noise.

Fortunately, just because there might be a budding rock band in your garage, it doesn’t mean you will suddenly be the most despised house on the block. Many great bands started their careers in garages and your kids could be next. There are some things you can do that will keep the garage a quieter place, and still allow your kids to rock out. Who knows? Maybe you even have an inner rock star of your own that might want to get unleashed.

Consider the insulation

Having proper insulation is essential. This is true whether the garage is attached to your home or if it is a detached garage. Having plenty of quality insulation in the garage and on the garage door will help to muffle the sound that escapes the garage. If you have a garage that is less than 20 years old, it likely has good insulation already. If you don’t already have good insulation, you will want to make sure the ceiling and the walls have a good thermal insulator, as well as an acoustic insulator. A good option is mineral wool panels.

One of the other things you want to consider when someone has a band in the garage is the time when they are allowed to play. You should set a practice curfew. Ideally, you’ll want to keep these to the daylight hours and at the very latest into the early evening. The last thing you need is for band practice to go on for too long or too late into the evening. The neighbors will certainly not be happy.

More ways to reduce the sound

You do not need a degree in acoustics to make sure your garage is as quiet as possible. However, you want to do a few things that can help to control that noise. Instruments that are on the floor, such as the speaker and drums, are responsible for most of the sound. By laying down noise absorbing carpet or a rubber pad, it can help. If you have the space in the garage, you might even want to put a “room within the room”. This room could be the practice space, and you can have it fully insulated and soundproofed. Of course, that might not be feasible for everyone.

Insulate the garage door

One of the areas of the garage that many people do not remember when it comes to insulation for sound is the garage door. However, if you have an effective weather seal system, it could reduce the amount of noise transmitted by around 50%. We have garage doors that are one and three-quarter inches thick, and that have been injected with polyurethane foam. The door includes weather stripping around the perimeter and between the sections and the exterior frame. This door can help to reduce sound substantially.
