Should You Insulate a Non-Insulated Garage Door?

Is money spent insulating a non-insulated garage door money well spent?

Did you just finish your garage door renovations? Did you add insulation to the surrounding garage, helping to protect it against extreme weather conditions? Insulating your garage can be great for staying comfortable while working for long hours. However, you may have discovered that the garage door itself is non‑insulated. Is it worth it to insulate your garage door?

You can insulate a non‑insulated garage door, but here is how to do it

You can absolutely insulate the garage door, but you should keep in mind that there are only two materials that work:

  • Mineral wool blankets: A standard product that can be found in a typical hardware or construction store, it is a roll of wool with flexible plastic film coated around it. It typically only costs between $75 to $100, and can keep the garage door nicely insulated.
  • Polystyrene insulating panels: This can be found in a hardware store or big-name brand store. They are literal panels of insulation, and they are made for single garage doors that are about 8 or 9 feet wide. Keep in mind that this material is flammable, and it must be covered with something else in order to prevent it from combusting or being ignited.

The cons of insulating a non-insulated garage door

There are a few negativities that come with insulating a non-insulated garage door. Even if you equip your garage door with the best insulation possible, it, unfortunately, won’t completely stop the cold air from coming through.

Why is this?

This is because the garage door itself was manufactured from a sheet metal that has no thermal break in it. This means there are gaps between the section endcaps on each side of the door. Insulating a non-insulated garage door will not increase the insulation levels from 0 to R-6.

Are there any advantages?

There are a few advantages when it comes to insulating anon-insulated garage door. The biggest advantage is that if you use mineral wool, the fluffy texture of the wool will prevent your door from making sounds when it opens and closes.

Please be warned!

Do not attempt to insulate your garage door with something other than the two materials listed above. Be sure that you are NOT adding extra weight to your door; if you do so, it may damage the door. Your garage door is calibrated based on the total weight of your non-insulated door. The spring system could break or may need to be replaced if you offer different materials.

Is insulating a non-insulated garage door worth it?

Unfortunately, most experts would agree that it is not worth insulating a non-insulated garage door. If you are concerned with reducing the noise of the metal scraping, then yes, insulation can help significantly. However, it may be better for you to find a new garage door if you are wanting the most effective forms of insulation.
